1968 Topps #218 Ken Suarez

About Ken Suarez
Selected by Cleveland in the 1967 Rule 5 draft, Suarez barely played for the Indians in 1968, appearing in just 17 games and going 1-for-10 at the plate, with his last appearance coming August 30. Card #218 is a third-series 1968 Topps issue showing him with the Cleveland Indians.
Ken Suarez was a right-handed-hitting catcher from Tampa, Florida who starred at Florida State, batting .404 as a junior and earning first-team All-America honors before representing the United States at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He signed with the Kansas City Athletics and reached the majors in 1966. Suarez split his seven big league seasons among the Athletics, Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers, valued more for his defense behind the plate than his bat; his best offensive showing came in 1969 with Cleveland, when he hit .294. He was part of the Rangers' inaugural 1972 roster under manager Ted Williams and, in 1973, broke up a Jim Palmer perfect-game bid with a ninth-inning single. A pay dispute with Texas led him to file the club's first arbitration case, and he chose to retire in 1974 rather than report to a new team after being traded back to Cleveland. He later worked in Texas as a Rangers scout and in the aviation industry.
