About Darrell Sutherland

Sutherland spent all of 1967 back in the minor leagues before Cleveland picked him up in that November's minor league draft. He made just three appearances for the 1968 Indians, throwing 3.1 innings with an 8.10 ERA, and his April 19 outing that year proved to be his last in the majors. This card, #551 in the seventh print series, is a high number and shows him with the Cleveland Indians.

Darrell Wayne Sutherland was a right-handed pitcher from Glendale, California, standing 6 feet 4 inches but a lean 169 pounds. He starred at Glendale High School before pitching at Stanford, the son of minor league pitcher Ralph Sutherland and brother of infielder Gary Sutherland. Signed by the Philadelphia Phillies in June 1963, he was picked up by the New York Mets in a first-year waiver draft the following April. Sutherland worked mostly as a reliever across four big league seasons with the Mets and Cleveland Indians, spanning 1964 to 1968 with a full year back in the minors in 1967. His best season came in 1965, when he went 3-1 with a 2.81 ERA out of the Mets bullpen. He finished his career 5-4 with a 4.78 ERA in 62 games, and was a capable enough hitter at the plate to bat .238 for his career, winning every one of his decisions as a reliever.
