About Woody Woodward

Woodward's 1968 season split between Atlanta and Cincinnati: he was hitting .167 in limited action for the Braves when he was traded to the Reds in June alongside Clay Carroll and Tony Cloninger, then batted .244 the rest of the way for Cincinnati while also serving as the club's Players Association representative. His 1968 Topps card, number 476, from the sixth print series, depicts him with the Atlanta Braves.

William Frederick Woodward, known as Woody, was a slick-fielding infielder from Miami who signed with the Milwaukee Braves out of Florida State University after a standout amateur career, including third-team All-American honors. He spent nine major league seasons, 1963 to 1971, as a shortstop and second baseman for the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds, valued more for his glove than his bat. His finest offensive year came in 1966 with Atlanta, when he posted career highs across the board. Traded to Cincinnati in 1968, he became a steady utility piece for the Big Red Machine, appearing in the 1970 National League Championship Series and World Series against Baltimore. He hit only one home run in 2,423 career plate appearances. He retired after the 1971 season and later built a long front-office career, including stints as general manager of the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, and Seattle Mariners.
