About Pat Jarvis

1968 was Jarvis's best season: a 16-12 record, a career-low 2.60 ERA, and 256 innings pitched with 157 strikeouts and 14 complete games, ranking him among the National League's top ten starters in wins, ERA, starts, and complete games. On May 17 he went 11 innings without a decision against the Mets in a game Atlanta won in the 16th. This 1968 Topps card shows him with the Braves.

Robert Patrick Jarvis was born March 18, 1941, in Carlyle, Illinois, and pitched at Murray State University before signing with the Chicago Cubs organization. Traded to the Milwaukee Braves system in October 1963, he worked his way up through Austin and Richmond before a midseason callup in 1966, when he won six games down the stretch for Atlanta and was voted the club's top rookie. From 1967 through 1970 he was one of the National League's steadier starters, winning 60 games over that stretch and topping the staff with a 16-12, 2.60 ERA season in 1968. He started Game 3 of the 1969 National League Championship Series against the Mets. Standing 5 foot 10, he earned the nickname "The Little Bulldog" during his major-league career. He finished with an 85-73 record and a 3.58 ERA across eight seasons with the Braves and Montreal Expos, retiring after 1973. He is not a Hall of Famer.
