About this card

Thirty Rookie Stars cards carry two players each on a horizontal front. The class is headlined by the two Hall of Fame rookies, #177 Nolan Ryan (with Jerry Koosman) and #247 Johnny Bench (with Ron Tompkins), with #384 Hal McRae (with Bill Henry) the other rookie card collectors chase.

The story on this card

By the time this Atlanta Braves Rookie Stars card appeared, Britton had already made his major league debut the previous September, an outing remembered for allowing Johnny Bench's first career home run. He was heading into what would prove his best season, a 1968 campaign of 34 games and a 3.10 ERA. The card pairs him with fellow Braves pitcher Ron Reed. A 6-foot-5 right-hander from North Tonawanda, New York, who pitched for the Braves and Expos from 1967 to 1971 and later became an FBI special agent.

Topps #76 pairs Ron Reed with fellow Braves prospect Jim Britton on a Rookie Stars card from the set's first print series. Reed had split 1967 between Triple-A Richmond and a late-season Atlanta call-up; for 1968 he moved into the Braves rotation full time, going 11-10 with a 3.35 ERA and six complete games and earning his only career All-Star selection. A two-sport pro who played NBA forward for Detroit before pitching nineteen major-league seasons for the Braves, Cardinals, Phillies and White Sox, finishing among the few hurlers with 100 wins, 100 saves and 50 complete games.
