About this card

Only thirteen team cards were issued in 1968; the Red Sox, Cubs, Indians, Astros, Yankees, Giants and Senators have none. #554 is the first Oakland Athletics team card - the A's moved from Kansas City for 1968.

The story on this card

This team card looks back on a 1967 club that finished fifth in the American League at 84-77, seven and a half games behind pennant-winning Boston, under manager Bill Rigney. Shortstop Jim Fregosi anchored the infield with a Gold Glove season, second baseman Bobby Knoop added another Gold Glove up the middle, first baseman Don Mincher hit 25 home runs, and reliever Minnie Rojas led the American League with 27 saves and a 2.52 ERA. The club played that season in just its second year at Anaheim's new stadium, which had opened in 1966. Card #252 falls in Topps' third print series in the 1968 set; like the other 1968 team cards, it pairs a team photo on the front with the Angels' 1967 batting and pitching leaders on the back.
