About Dennis Higgins

Card #509, from the sixth print series, pictures Higgins with the Washington Senators following his February 1968 trade from Chicago. That season he set a career high with 59 relief appearances and 99 2/3 innings, won four games, saved 13, and posted a 3.25 ERA to lead the Senators in saves.

Dennis Dean Higgins was a right-handed relief pitcher from Jefferson City, Missouri, who signed with the Chicago White Sox in 1958 and spent eight full seasons in their farm system before finally reaching the majors in 1966 at age 26. He built a reputation as a durable bullpen arm, leading the Washington Senators in saves in both 1968 and 1969 and later leading the Cleveland Indians in both games pitched and saves during his lone season there in 1970. His best year came in 1969, when he set career highs with ten wins and sixteen saves pitching for first-year Washington manager Ted Williams. A multiplayer trade in February 1968 sent him from Chicago to Washington, and another multiplayer deal in December 1969 sent him on to Cleveland. He closed out his career with brief stints in the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 1971 and 1972. Over seven big-league seasons he compiled a 22-23 record with a 3.42 ERA and 46 saves in 241 appearances, almost all in relief.
