About Joe Coleman

Coleman logged a full workload for Washington in 1968, going 12-16 with a 3.27 ERA and a dozen complete games across 33 starts. His solo 1968 Topps card, #573, fell in the seventh and final print series, making it a high number within the set.

Joe Coleman was a hard-throwing right-hander who became the first-ever amateur draft pick to reach the majors, debuting with the Washington Senators in September 1965 less than four months after high school. He anchored the Senators' rotation through the late 1960s before a 1970 trade sent him to Detroit, where he had the best stretch of his career: a 20-win, 236-strikeout season in 1971, a 19-win 1972 campaign that included an American League All-Star selection, and a career-high 23 wins in 1973. Coleman also threw a complete-game shutout in the 1972 ALCS, setting a series strikeout record. Later stops included the Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates before he retired in 1979 with a 142-135 record and 1,728 strikeouts across fifteen major league seasons. His father and son were also major league pitchers, making the Colemans the first three-generation pitching family in the sport.
