1968 Topps #572 Don Bosch

About Don Bosch
Bosch entered 1968 as a reserve outfielder for the Mets under new manager Gil Hodges, who told him he'd be judged only on what he showed in camp. Tommie Agee, acquired that winter from the White Sox, took over center field, leaving Bosch in a backup role for New York. He played in 50 games that season, batting .171 with 3 home runs. This card is #572 in the 1968 Topps set's seventh series, a high number and a recognized rookie card.
Don Bosch was a switch-hitting outfielder from San Francisco whose glove work in the minor leagues drew comparisons to Willie Mays. Signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of St. Ignatius College Prep in 1960, he climbed the Pirates system as an all-star at nearly every level, capped by a standout 1966 season at Triple-A Columbus where he was named the International League's top defensive outfielder. That December he was traded, along with Don Cardwell, to the New York Mets for pitcher Dennis Ribant and Gary Kolb, arriving with outsized expectations as the club's answer in center field. The hype proved heavier than his bat, and Bosch never matched his minor-league form in the majors, settling in as a reserve outfielder for the Mets in 1967 and 1968. Purchased by the expansion Montreal Expos after the 1968 season, he played his final big-league games there in 1969 before a knee injury effectively ended his career. He finished with a .164 average over four seasons.
