1968 Topps #418 Eddie Fisher

About Eddie Fisher
Baltimore traded Fisher to Cleveland in November 1967, sending him and two minor leaguers for John O'Donoghue and Gordon Lund. He led Alvin Dark's Indians with 54 appearances in 1968, every one out of the bullpen, going 4-2 with four saves and a 2.85 ERA over 94.2 innings for a third-place club. His 1968 Topps card, #418, is a fifth-series issue picturing him with Cleveland. By 1968 Fisher had been turning up in Topps sets for most of a decade.
Eddie Gene Fisher (1936-2025) was a right-handed knuckleball pitcher, born in Shreveport, Louisiana and raised in southwestern Oklahoma, where he pitched Friendship High School to a 1954 state championship before starring at the University of Oklahoma. He signed with the San Francisco Giants and reached the majors on June 22, 1959. Across fifteen big-league seasons he worked for the Giants, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, California Angels and St. Louis Cardinals. After Chicago acquired the great knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm in January 1963, Fisher came under his tutelage, and manager Al Lopez reckoned that by 1965 his pupil was throwing the pitch about 85 percent of the time. Fisher became one of the era's busiest relievers, made the American League All-Star team in 1965, and won a World Series ring with the 1966 Orioles without appearing in the Series. He finished in 1973 with an 85-70 record, 81 saves, 812 strikeouts and a 3.41 ERA in 690 games, and at retirement he was the American League's all-time leader in relief appearances. He belongs to the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, not the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
