1968 Topps #506 Clarence Jones

About Clarence Jones
Card #506, in Topps' sixth series, is Clarence Jones's only card and his rookie card, issued as his time in the majors was ending. Roster competition at outfield and first base left no regular spot for him with the Cubs that year, and he appeared in just five games before his final big-league appearance on September 25. He answered by hitting 24 home runs for Triple-A Tacoma that season, the kind of power that would soon carry him to stardom in Japan.
Clarence Woodrow Jones grew up in Zanesville, Ohio, one of ten children, and starred in multiple sports before signing his first professional contract. He left an early stint in the Deep South after facing racial discrimination, later resurfacing in the Los Angeles Dodgers system, where his signature season came with Salem in 1964: a .344 average, 33 home runs, and a league-leading 120 RBIs that made him one of Topps' Minor League Players of the Year. The Chicago Cubs drafted him in 1965 and brought him to the majors in 1967. A left-handed hitter who played outfield and first base, he spent two seasons with the Cubs before moving on. He then went to Japan, where he became the first American to win a Nippon Professional Baseball home-run title, topping the Pacific League with 38 homers in 1974 and adding a second title in 1976 across an eight-year NPB career. He later worked as a hitting instructor for the Atlanta Braves organization.
