About Jose Cardenal

Traded to the Cleveland Indians for outfielder Chuck Hinton that November, Cardenal enjoyed his best two-way season yet in 1968, batting .257 with a career-high 40 stolen bases, tops on the Indians, and tying a major league record for outfielders with two unassisted double plays. His 1968 Topps #102 still shows him with the Angels, printed before the trade caught up with the set.

Jose Cardenal was a Cuban-born outfielder who played eighteen major league seasons from 1963 to 1980 for nine teams, most memorably the Chicago Cubs, where he became a fan favorite for his hitting, speed and strong throwing arm. Born in Matanzas, Cuba, he grew up playing ball with his second cousin Bert Campaneris before signing with the San Francisco Giants and working his way up through the minors. Traded to the California Angels, then Cleveland, St. Louis and Milwaukee, Cardenal blossomed into a full-time regular known for stolen bases and gap power, twice leading Cleveland in steals and setting a career high in Chicago with a .317 average in 1975. He finished his career a .275 hitter with 138 home runs, 775 RBI and 329 stolen bases across 2,017 games, closing out his playing days with a World Series appearance for the Kansas City Royals in 1980. He went on to coach for several major league organizations, including three World Series runs as first base coach for the New York Yankees.
