The story on this card
Vinson's brief 1966 trial with the California Angels, 13 games capped by a two-hit, four-RBI game against the Orioles that produced his only big-league home run, is the backstory behind his 1968 Topps rookie card. Card #328, part of the fourth print series, is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue pairing him with fellow Angels farmhand Jim Weaver, both pictured as California Angels prospects. It stands as Vinson's only Topps card. A left-handed-hitting first baseman from Washington, D.C. who reached the majors with the 1966 California Angels after standout power numbers in the Pacific Coast League.
In his second and final big league season, Weaver went 0-1 with a 2.38 ERA in 14 relief appearances for the Angels, covering 22.2 innings with 8 strikeouts before his last game on June 29. Topps featured him on a 1968 Rookie Stars card shared with fellow Angels hopeful Chuck Vinson, part of the set's fourth print series and a recognized rookie card for both players. Left-handed pitcher who climbed through more than a dozen minor league stops before reaching the California Angels in 1967, posting a 3-1 record over two seasons.
