1968 Topps #488 Dick Tracewski

About Dick Tracewski
1968 was Tracewski's championship season in Detroit: he appeared in 90 games at shortstop and third base, hit a game-turning three-run homer against Cleveland in June that Tigers manager Mayo Smith credited with sparking the team's pennant drive, and helped Detroit beat St. Louis in a seven-game World Series, his third championship as a player. Card #488 sits in the sixth series.
Dick Tracewski was a utility infielder who spent eight big league seasons split between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers, playing shortstop, second base and third base. Signed by Brooklyn out of Pennsylvania in 1953, he needed six minor league seasons plus two years of military duty before debuting in 1962 in the first-ever series at the new Dodger Stadium. He was a steady reserve on the Dodgers' 1963 and 1965 championship clubs, then went to Detroit in a trade for pitcher Phil Regan and helped the Tigers win the 1968 World Series. He retired as a player after the 1969 season with a .213 career average, then spent parts of three decades coaching for Detroit, including two brief stretches as interim manager. Teammates nicknamed him for his acrobatics at team pool parties.
