1968 Topps #332 Doug Rader

About Doug Rader
Houston shifted Rader from first base to third base for 1968, and he claimed the everyday job by the second half of the season, batting .267 with six home runs and 43 RBI in 98 games. It was his first full year at the position that would become his trademark; two years later he broke out with the first of five straight Gold Glove Awards. This card catches him mid-transition into the role that defined his career.
Doug Rader was a third baseman who built his reputation on defense. Signed by the Houston Astros as an undrafted free agent out of Bloomington, Illinois, he reached the majors in 1967 and became Houston's everyday third baseman the following year. Rader anchored the position for a decade, hitting 155 home runs and driving in 722 runs over an eleven-year career split between the Astros, San Diego Padres, and Toronto Blue Jays. His glove was the calling card: he won five consecutive Gold Glove Awards at third base from 1970 through 1974. Nicknamed "the Red Rooster" for the thick red hair under his cap, he later moved into coaching and managing, leading the Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, and California Angels between 1983 and 1991 after retiring as a player in 1978.
