1968 Topps #410 Ferguson Jenkins

About Ferguson Jenkins
Three cards in the 1968 set, all fed by one breakout summer. First-series League Leaders #9 ranks him behind Mike McCormick among National League win leaders, with Jim Bunning and Claude Osteen alongside; #11 lists him behind Bunning and ahead of Gaylord Perry in strikeouts. His own portrait is #410, from the fifth series. The 1967 line behind them: 20-13, a 2.80 ERA, 236 strikeouts and a tie for second in the Cy Young voting.
Ferguson Arthur Jenkins of Chatham, Ontario, signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1962 and debuted out of the bullpen in September 1965. On April 21, 1966 the Phillies sent him to the Chicago Cubs with Adolfo Phillips and John Herrnstein for Larry Jackson and Bob Buhl, and Chicago turned the lanky right-hander into a workhorse starter. Pitching in hitter-friendly Wrigley Field, he won 20 or more games in six straight seasons from 1967 through 1972, equaling Mordecai Brown's long-standing Cubs mark, and took the 1971 National League Cy Young Award after going 24-13 with 263 strikeouts against only 37 walks in 325 innings. He was an All-Star in 1967, 1971 and 1972, led the National League in wins in 1971 and the American League in wins in 1974, when a career-best 25 victories for the Texas Rangers brought him Comeback Player of the Year honors. He retired after the 1983 season with 284 wins, 3,192 strikeouts and 267 complete games, the first pitcher to reach 3,000 strikeouts while walking fewer than 1,000 batters. In 1991 he became the first Canadian elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
