About Bill Denehy

Denehy opened his Senators tenure in the March 7 spring opener against the Yankees, allowing only a wind-blown single by Tom Tresh in three innings. Despite a good spring he missed the rotation, appeared in three April games for two innings and a 9.00 ERA, and spent most of the season in the minors. His 1968 Topps #526 shows him as a Senator; it comes from the sixth series.

William Francis Denehy was a right-handed pitcher from Middletown, Connecticut, who signed with the New York Mets out of high school in September 1964 for a package of about $20,000. He rose quickly through the Mets system, earning an all-star nod at Class-A Auburn in 1965 and posting a 1.97 ERA at Double-A Williamsport in 1966 before a strong 1967 spring training won him the fifth spot in the Mets rotation. He debuted on April 16, 1967, striking out eight, then pitched through shoulder pain that was eventually traced to a torn muscle near his armpit. That November the Mets sent Denehy and $100,000 to the Washington Senators for manager Gil Hodges, a deal that released Hodges from his Senators contract so he could take over the Mets. Denehy pitched sparingly for Washington in 1968 and spent most of that year and the next in the minors before returning with the 1971 Detroit Tigers, appearing in 31 games, all but one in relief. He retired after the 1973 season with a career record of 1-10 and a 4.56 ERA over 49 games. He later coached in the Red Sox minor-league system and was head coach at the University of Hartford, and also worked in real estate, television and radio.
