About this card

This is one of the three combo cards in the 1968 Topps set - #480 Manager's Dream (Oliva, Cardenas and Clemente), #490 Super Stars (Killebrew, Mays and Mantle) and #530 Bird Belters (Frank and Brooks Robinson) - each pairing stars under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.

The story on this card

Topps put Baltimore's two Robinsons on one card for #530 and titled it Bird Belters, a play on the Orioles name and the power both men brought to the lineup. Frank Robinson arrived from Cincinnati in a December 1965 trade and won the Triple Crown in his first Baltimore season, while Brooks Robinson had signed with the Orioles out of Little Rock in 1955. In Game 1 of the 1966 World Series they hit back-to-back home runs off Don Drysdale, and the Orioles swept the Dodgers. Both men were American League All-Stars again in 1967. The card comes from the sixth series.

Frank Robinson - Cincinnati's 1961 National League MVP, then Baltimore's 1966 American League Triple Crown winner, MVP and World Series MVP after one of baseball's most lopsided trades; nicknamed "the Judge," he later became the majors' first Black manager. Brooks Robinson manned third base for the Baltimore Orioles across 23 seasons, redefining the position with 16 straight Gold Gloves, the 1964 AL MVP award, and the show-stopping glovework that made him MVP of the 1970 World Series.
