1968 Topps #546 Roy White

About Roy White
1968 was the year White finally won a full-time job, taking over as the Yankees' everyday left fielder by the end of May after opening the season as a pinch hitter and defensive replacement. On August 13, manager Ralph Houk moved him into the cleanup spot, shifting Mickey Mantle to third in the order. White responded with a .267 average, 17 home runs, and a team-leading 62 RBI, a season strong enough to place him 12th in that year's AL MVP voting. His 1968 Topps #546, from the seventh series, is a high number.
Roy White was a switch-hitting outfielder who spent his entire 15-year major league career with the New York Yankees, from 1965 through 1979. Signed out of Compton, California, he broke in as a September call-up in 1965 and by 1968 had claimed the everyday left field job, even hitting cleanup behind Mickey Mantle late that season. White made the American League All-Star team in 1969 and 1970, led the league in walks in 1972 and in runs scored in 1976, and set an AL record with 17 sacrifice flies in 1971. A steady, versatile presence through the club's lean late-1960s years, he stayed long enough to help anchor the Yankees' return to prominence, playing on three straight pennant winners from 1976 to 1978 and winning back-to-back World Series titles in 1977 and 1978. He finished with a .271 career batting average, 160 home runs, and 233 stolen bases, and later coached for the Yankees.
