The story on this card
1968 was Murrell's last season in a Houston uniform: he appeared in 32 games for the Astros, splitting time in the outfield, before Houston left him unprotected and San Diego selected him in that fall's expansion draft. His 1968 Topps card, #569, is a high-number Rookie Stars issue -- his recognized rookie card -- shared with Les Rohr, pairing Murrell's Astros entry with Rohr representing the Mets on the same card. Panamanian-born outfielder who broke in with Houston, was taken by San Diego in the 1968 expansion draft, and peaked there with a 12-homer season in 1970.
Rohr opened 1968 on the Mets roster after a strong late-1967 debut, but his season unraveled in a marathon game against the Houston Astros on April 15, when he entered as a reliever in the 22nd inning of what became a 24-inning contest and injured his pitching arm. He made only one more start before the injury sent him to the disabled list and the minor leagues for the rest of the year, finishing 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in two games. His 1968 Topps card is a high number, #569, part of the Rookie Stars subset shared with Houston Astros outfielder Ivan Murrell, and is recognized as Rohr's rookie card. English-born Mets prospect and 1965 draft's second overall pick who beat Don Drysdale as a rookie before a 1968 arm injury derailed his promising career.
