1968 Topps #465 Tommie Agee

About Tommie Agee
Traded to the Mets that December along with Al Weis, Agee was beaned by Bob Gibson in his first spring training at bats and endured an 0-for-34 slump that dropped his average to .102 early in the season. He recovered to finish at .217 with five home runs and 17 RBIs in his first year in New York. This 1968 Topps #465, from print series 6, captures him as a new Met the year before the Miracle.
Tommie Agee was a center fielder who broke in with Cleveland in 1962, moved to the Chicago White Sox in a three-team trade after the 1964 season, and became the everyday center fielder and leadoff man for the 1969 Miracle Mets. He grew up in Mobile, Alabama with future Mets teammate Cleon Jones, then signed with Cleveland after one season at Grambling State. In Chicago he won the 1966 AL Rookie of the Year award and a Gold Glove after homering more than 20 times and stealing more than 40 bases as a rookie, then made a second All-Star team in 1967. Traded to New York after the 1967 season, he led the 1969 Mets in homers and RBIs, homered twice in the NLCS sweep of Atlanta, then led off Game 3 of the World Series with a home run off Jim Palmer and made two legendary catches in that game as the Mets upset Baltimore. He closed his career with Houston and St. Louis and died in 2001.
