The story on this card
Larry Colton's card is part of the Rookie Stars subset, shared with fellow Phillies pitching prospect Dick Thoenen. The back reports his 1967 season at Class AAA San Diego, where he started 31 games, tying for the Pacific Coast League lead, and posted a 14-14 record with a 3.09 ERA while helping his club to the PCL championship. Colton opened 1968 back in the minors before an April call-up led to his major league debut with the Phillies that May. A California-born right-hander who set a Cal Berkeley strikeout record before a single big-league relief outing for the Phillies; later a magazine writer and author.
Dick Thoenen's only card appearance came in the 1968 Topps set, on card #348 from the fourth print series, a Rookie Stars issue shared with fellow pitcher Larry Colton, both pictured as Phillies. It is a plain series-four card, and it stands as a recognized rookie card for Thoenen, arriving the year after his single major-league outing in 1967 and giving collectors their one printed record of him. A towering 6-foot-6 right-hander from Mexico, Missouri, born in 1944, who pitched exactly one big-league game for the 1967 Phillies before his career quietly ended, never returning to the majors.
