About Rich Nye

In his sophomore season Nye started the Cubs' home opener but was hit on the pitching arm by a line drive off Curt Flood's bat and lost his next four decisions before earning his first win in May. He beat the Dodgers for his only career shutout, then moved to the bullpen in July and finished 7-12, 3.80. His 1968 Topps card, #339, shows him with the Cubs.

Rich Nye pitched five big-league seasons, 1966-1970, as a left-hander for the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and Montreal Expos, finishing 26-31 with a 3.71 ERA. A civil engineering graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, he broke into the majors with the Cubs in September 1966 and built his career around a strong 1967 rookie season under manager Leo Durocher. Arm trouble shortened his career, and he retired after the 1970 season. Nye later earned a veterinary degree from the University of Illinois and became a specialist in avian and exotic-animal medicine, co-founding Midwest Bird and Exotic Animal Hospital in Westchester, Illinois in 1985, one of the first all-exotic veterinary practices in the country. He served as a charter member and later president of the Association of Avian Veterinarians. He also spent time as a commodities trader at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange between his playing days and his veterinary training.
