About Pete Mikkelsen

Card #516 in 1968 Topps, from the set's sixth series, shows Mikkelsen with the Chicago Cubs, the club he opened that season with before an April trade sent him to the St. Louis Cardinals. He appeared in just eight games between the two teams, posting a 2.61 ERA in 20.2 innings.

Pete Mikkelsen was a sinker-ball right-handed relief pitcher who spent nine major league seasons, from 1964 to 1972, with the New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers. Born in Staten Island, New York, and raised partly in Alhambra, California, he broke through in the minors under manager Rube Walker, who converted him from a straight overhand delivery to a sidearm sinkerball style that transformed his results. He reached the Yankees in 1964 and helped the club to an American League pennant as a rookie, going 7-4 with a 3.56 ERA and 12 saves before pitching in that year's World Series. His best season came in 1966 with Pittsburgh, when he set career highs with nine wins, 14 saves, 76 strikeouts and 126 innings across a career-high 71 appearances. He also logged four seasons with the Dodgers from 1969 through 1972. Over his career he compiled a 45-40 record, 3.38 ERA and 49 saves in 364 games. He was not selected to an All-Star team and is not a Hall of Fame inductee. He died in Mabton, Washington, in 2006.
