The story on this card
Mitterwald got his first real look in the majors in 1968, appearing in 11 games behind the plate for the Twins after a brief 1966 debut. His 1968 Topps card (#301) is a Rookie Stars issue from the fourth print series, pairing him with fellow Twins rookie Rick Renick. It stands as his recognized rookie card. A steady-handed Twins and Cubs catcher across 11 big-league seasons who caught for Billy Martin's 1969 Twins, reached two ALCS with Minnesota, and later coached in the majors himself.
Renick's 1968 Topps card is number 301, a Rookie Stars issue shared with fellow Minnesota Twins prospect George Mitterwald, part of the set's fourth print series. It doubles as his rookie card, arriving the same year he reached the majors: recalled from Triple-A Denver in midseason, Renick started at shortstop for Minnesota's final three months and homered off Detroit's Mickey Lolich in his first big league at-bat. Minnesota Twins infielder-outfielder who homered off Mickey Lolich in his first big league at-bat, then spent 13 seasons coaching in the majors, including Minnesota's 1987 World Series title run.
