About Rick Wise

Wise logged a full 30 starts for the Phillies in 1968, throwing 182 innings with seven complete games, though his win total dipped to 9-15 as the club struggled. On August 8 that year he lost a no-hit bid against the Dodgers on a bad-hop grounder that was ruled a hit despite the fielder's own admission of an error. This Philadelphia Phillies card, numbered 262, is part of the set's third print series.

Rick Wise was a right-handed pitcher who spent 18 seasons in the majors, mostly with the Philadelphia Phillies, plus stops in St. Louis, Boston, Cleveland and San Diego. A bonus signing out of Portland, Oregon, he debuted with the Phillies as an 18-year-old in 1964 and grew into a workhorse starter, twice making the All-Star team. His signature moment came on June 23, 1971, when he no-hit the Cincinnati Reds while also hitting two home runs in the same game, a feat matched by no one else in major-league history. After the 1971 season he was traded to St. Louis for Steve Carlton, one of the most lopsided deals in the sport's history, then moved to Boston in 1974. With the Red Sox he won 19 games in 1975 and helped the club to the pennant, picking up the ALCS-clinching win and a relief victory in the classic Game Six of that year's World Series. He finished his career with 188 wins and 15 home runs, a rare power threat for a pitcher, before going on to a long run as a minor-league pitching coach.
