1968 Topps #382 Ramon Hernandez

About Ramon Hernandez
Pictured with the Chicago Cubs, who claimed Hernandez off Atlanta in the November 1967 Rule 5 draft, this card falls in the set's fifth series. Hernandez's rookie card is his 1967 Topps card. His stay in Chicago was short: he appeared in eight games for the Cubs and was hit hard, allowing nine earned runs in nine innings, before St. Louis purchased his contract in June 1968. He would not appear in a major league game for the Cardinals, spending the rest of that season and part of the next in the minors before Pittsburgh reacquired him in 1971 and he settled into the bullpen role that defined his career.
Ramon Hernandez was a switch-hitting, left-handed relief pitcher from Carolina, Puerto Rico. Signed by Pittsburgh in 1959, he spent more than a decade grinding through the minors and winter ball before reaching the majors with Atlanta in 1967 at age 26. After brief stops with the Cubs, the Pirates reacquired him in 1971, and he became a mainstay of their bullpen for the rest of the decade, pairing a sidearm delivery and a screwball with sharp control against left-handed hitters. His best season came in 1972, when he went 5-0 with a 1.67 ERA and 14 saves. He pitched in three straight National League Championship Series with Pittsburgh from 1972 to 1975. Teammates and coaches credited his deceptive, multi-angle motion for his effectiveness late in games. He also played 21 winter-league seasons in Puerto Rico. Hernandez finished his nine-season career with a 23-15 record, a 3.03 ERA, and 46 saves in 337 appearances.
