1968 Topps #511 Bill Kelso

About Bill Kelso
1968 Topps #511 was issued in the set's sixth print series, showing Kelso with the Cincinnati Reds after he left the Angels organization. It covers his fourth and final major league season, in which he made 35 relief appearances for Cincinnati before his playing career came to a close.
William Eugene Kelso grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, where he was a three-sport letterman at North Kansas City High School and helped his basketball team reach the 1957 state finals. He took a scholarship to the University of Kansas before the Los Angeles Dodgers signed him as an amateur free agent in 1962, and the Angels then took him in the December 1963 Rule 5 draft. A tall right-hander, Kelso reached the majors on July 31, 1964, striking out the first batter he faced in relief against Boston. He spent three seasons with the Los Angeles and California Angels before joining the Cincinnati Reds for his final big-league season in 1968. His busiest year came in 1967, when he worked out of the Angels bullpen 69 times. After his playing days ended, Kelso built a long second career as a scout, spending 29 years in the role, including 14 as national scouting supervisor for the Houston Astros, and had a hand in finding future big leaguers before he died in 2009.
