About Dave Bristol
Card #148, from the second print series, shows Bristol managing the Cincinnati Reds, who went 83-79 for fourth place in 1968, his second full year running the club he had inherited in mid-1966. He had built his managerial credentials in the Reds farm system through the late 1950s and early 1960s, never having played in the major leagues himself.
James David Bristol, born June 23, 1933 in Bristol, Georgia, was a minor league infielder who became a playing manager in the Cincinnati farm system in 1957 at age 24, but he never appeared in a major league game. By 1964 he was piloting the Reds' top affiliate, the Pacific Coast League San Diego Padres, to a pennant. His minor league clubs won 652 and lost 562 over his nine seasons as a pilot. Cincinnati promoted him to the big league coaching staff in 1966, and when manager Don Heffner struggled that July, Bristol took over the Reds in-season. He led Cincinnati through three winning campaigns before his 1969 dismissal, after which Sparky Anderson inherited the roster that became the Big Red Machine. Bristol went on to manage the Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants, and coached for the Phillies and Expos across a career that spanned more than four decades in professional baseball.
