The story on this card
Bill Davis's 1968 Topps card is a fifth-series Cleveland Indians Rookie Stars issue, shared with Jose Vidal. Issued as Davis worked to return to form after his 1967 Achilles injury, the card still carries his 1966 line, his most recent major league action, while he spent 1968 rebuilding his game at Triple-A Portland. A 6-foot-7 first baseman from Minnesota who reached the majors with Cleveland in 1965, Davis hit his only career home run as a pinch hitter in 1966 and started the Padres' first-ever regular season game in 1969.
1968 Topps #432, from the fifth print series, is another Rookie Stars card, this time pairing Vidal with Indians teammate Bill Davis. Vidal appeared in a career-high 37 games for Cleveland in 1968, splitting time mostly in the outfield with a brief stint at first base, and hit two home runs, matching his career high. One of those, a walk-off shot off Jack Fisher against the Chicago White Sox on June 3, 1968, was a highlight of his time with the Indians. A hard-hitting Dominican minor leaguer whose bat never translated to the majors; a 1963 California League Triple Crown and MVP season preceded a brief four-year big league run.
