1968 Topps #212 Dave Morehead

About Dave Morehead
Card #212 is a series-3 number, and it marks a comeback. Morehead opened 1967 at Triple-A Toronto, 11-5 with a 3.10 ERA, was recalled in late July and went 5-4 with a 4.34 ERA in ten appearances, including a 4-0 shutout of Detroit on August 15, his first complete game since the no-hitter. Then the World Series against St. Louis: three hitless relief innings in Game Four, and the ninth of Game Seven, where he struck out Bob Gibson before walking the bases loaded.
David Michael Morehead was a right-handed pitcher who spent eight major league seasons (1963-1970), the first six with the Boston Red Sox and the last two with the expansion Kansas City Royals. Signed by scout Ray Boone off a 16-0 senior season at San Diego's Hoover High School, the school that also produced Ted Williams, he was in a big league rotation less than two years later and opened his career with a five-hit, 10-strikeout, 3-0 shutout of Washington on April 13, 1963. On September 16, 1965 he no-hit the Cleveland Indians 2-0, walking only Rocky Colavito. It was the last no-hitter by a Red Sox pitcher until Hideo Nomo's in 2001, and the last thrown at Fenway Park until Derek Lowe's in 2002. A shoulder injury early the following season cost him his rotation job, and he never held a regular starting role again. He finished 40-64 with a 4.15 ERA and 627 strikeouts in 177 games and 819 1/3 innings, then earned a marketing degree from San Diego State University and built a business selling sporting goods to retail chains.
