About Mike Hegan

Optioned to the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs for the 1968 season, Hegan hit .304 with 11 home runs and 39 RBI while playing mostly right field. On June 14 the Yankees sold his contract to the expansion Seattle Pilots for 25,000 dollars, with the stipulation that he finish the season at Syracuse. His 1968 Topps card, #402 from print series five, still pictures him with the Yankees.

Mike Hegan was a left-handed first baseman and outfielder who played twelve major league seasons between 1964 and 1977, all in the American League. The son of longtime Cleveland catcher Jim Hegan, he signed with the New York Yankees in 1961 out of College of the Holy Cross and reached the majors in September 1964, joining that fall's World Series roster as a replacement for the injured Tony Kubek. After parts of three seasons with the Yankees, he was sold to the expansion Seattle Pilots in 1968 and became the new franchise's first player and first home run hitter, earning a 1969 All-Star selection before an injury forced him to withdraw. He moved with the franchise to Milwaukee as the Brewers began play in 1970, and later played for the Oakland Athletics, winning a World Series ring with the club in 1972, before finishing his career back with the Brewers in 1977. Over 966 games he batted .242 with 53 home runs. He was not elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
