1968 Topps #483 Darold Knowles

About Darold Knowles
Knowles' 1968 season with Washington was cut short when his Air National Guard unit was activated and sent overseas that July, holding him to 32 appearances with a 2.18 ERA and four saves for the year. This series-6 solo card reflects his abbreviated wartime season with the Senators.
Darold Knowles was a left-handed relief pitcher from Brunswick, Missouri who spent 16 seasons in the majors from 1965 to 1980 with the Orioles, Phillies, Senators/Rangers, Athletics, Cubs, Expos and Cardinals. He built his reputation as a bullpen workhorse in Washington, posting career highs of 71 appearances and 27 saves in 1970, and earned his only All-Star selection in 1969. Traded to Oakland in 1971, he became a key late-inning arm alongside Rollie Fingers for the Athletics' three straight World Series champions of 1972-1974, and in the 1973 World Series he became the first pitcher ever to appear in all seven games, closing out the Game Seven clincher against the Mets. He later spent decades as a pitching coach in the Cardinals, Phillies, Pirates and Blue Jays organizations. He is a member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
