1968 Topps #427 Dick Calmus

About Dick Calmus
Card #427 in 1968 Topps' fifth print series shows Calmus with the Chicago Cubs, the club that acquired him from the Dodgers organization after arm trouble in the minors had slowed the promise of his sharp 1963 rookie season. His time in Chicago yielded only a single major league appearance, in 1967, closing out a big league pitching career that finished with a 3-1 record and 3.17 ERA.
Richard Lee Calmus, a right-handed pitcher out of Tulsa, Oklahoma, signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers as a bonus baby, a rule that kept him on the major league roster straight out of high school rather than in the minors. Standing 6-foot-4, he made his debut in 1963 and turned in a strong rookie season, going 3-1 with a 2.66 ERA across 21 games for a Dodgers pitching staff built around veteran arms. Arm trouble developed in the minors afterward, and he did not pitch in the majors again until a brief 1967 stint with the Chicago Cubs, where he appeared in a single game. His career closed with a 3-1 record and a 3.17 ERA over 22 games. At Tulsa's Webster High School he had been a standout basketball player and won two state baseball titles alongside future big leaguer Carl Morton. He is the uncle of Rocky Calmus, the Butkus Award-winning linebacker.
