About this card

Thirty Rookie Stars cards carry two players each on a horizontal front. The class is headlined by the two Hall of Fame rookies, #177 Nolan Ryan (with Jerry Koosman) and #247 Johnny Bench (with Ron Tompkins), with #384 Hal McRae (with Bill Henry) the other rookie card collectors chase.

The story on this card

Hisle broke into the majors with the Phillies on April 10, 1968, part of a pair of touted young infield-outfield prospects rushed to the Opening Day roster. He started three games, pinch-hit once, and appeared as a late-inning defensive replacement, going 4-for-11 before Philadelphia optioned him back to Triple-A San Diego in late April. His season ended in July after he was diagnosed with hepatitis. Card #579, a high number from Topps' seventh series, is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue pairing him with Mike Lum, representing the Phillies and Braves, and stands as Hisle's rookie card. A two-time All-Star outfielder who led the American League in RBI in 1977 with the Minnesota Twins after rebuilding his career following a rough start in Philadelphia.

In 1968, with starting left fielder Rico Carty sidelined the entire season by tuberculosis, Lum platooned with Tito Francona in left field while also spelling Hank Aaron in right and Felipe Alou in center, appearing in 122 games and batting .224 with 3 home runs and 21 RBI. Card #579 is his first Topps card, a Rookie Stars card from the high-number series 7, shared with Larry Hisle and recognized as Lum's rookie card. A Honolulu-born outfielder-first baseman who spent fifteen big-league seasons as a versatile reserve for the Braves, Reds and Cubs before becoming a longtime minor-league hitting coach.
