1968 Topps #564 Eddie Stanky

About this card
This is one of the twenty manager cards in the 1968 Topps set, numbered among the regular cards rather than grouped as a subset.
About Eddie Stanky
Card 564, a high number in the final series, shows Stanky's third and last season managing the White Sox. Chicago lost its first ten games and stumbled to 34-45 by mid-July, when Stanky was fired and Al Lopez returned from retirement to take the job back.
Eddie Stanky was a scrappy, undersized second baseman who made himself into a winner through will more than raw tools. Born in Philadelphia in 1915, he reached the majors in 1943 with the Cubs and went on to play for the Dodgers, Braves, Giants and Cardinals through 1953, drawing walks at an elite rate (over 100 in six different seasons) and leading the National League in on-base percentage twice. He reached the World Series three times with three different pennant winners. As a Dodger in 1947 he was among Jackie Robinson's earliest teammate supporters. He later managed the Cardinals, White Sox and briefly the Rangers, was named Manager of the Year with St. Louis in 1952, and closed out his baseball life as a highly successful college coach at South Alabama.
