The story on this card
Abarbanel's card year finds him in his third White Sox farm season, having spent all of 1968 with the Double-A Evansville White Sox after strong strikeout numbers as a rookie with Fox Cities in 1966. Topps paired him with fellow White Sox farmhand Cisco Carlos on card #287, a Rookie Stars entry from the set's fourth series. It is a recognized rookie card for both pitchers, issued while Abarbanel was still working his way through Chicago's minor league chain rather than pitching in the big leagues. Left-handed White Sox farmhand out of Monmouth University in New Jersey who fired a Midwest League no-hitter in his 1966 debut season but never got past Triple-A to reach the majors.
Carlos's 1968 Topps card, #287, is a Rookie Stars issue in the fourth print series, sharing the card with fellow White Sox farmhand Mickey Abarbanel. The card catches him as a White Sox right-hander in the 1968 season, when he worked mostly as a starter, going 4-14 with a 3.90 ERA over 29 appearances, 21 of them starts, striking out 57 in 122.1 innings. Cisco Carlos was a right-handed pitcher who broke in with the Chicago White Sox in 1967, beating the Tigers and Indians in a September pennant race before four big-league seasons split between Chicago and Washington.
