About Jay Johnstone

Johnstone again opened the season on California's roster but was optioned to Triple-A in June as he continued working to establish himself in the majors, appearing in only 41 games and batting .261 with no home runs. His 1968 Topps card, #389 in the fifth series, pictures him with the Angels.

Jay Johnstone was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who spent parts of twenty big-league seasons, from his 1966 debut with the California Angels to his final game with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1985. A platoon and role player for most of his career, he also suited up for the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs, finishing with a .267 average, 102 home runs and two World Series rings, in 1978 with the Yankees and 1981 with the Dodgers. His best offensive stretch came with Philadelphia in the mid-1970s, hitting .329 in 1975 and going 7-for-9 in the 1976 NLCS. Off the field he became one of baseball's most notorious pranksters, filling teammates' gloves with brownies, setting cleats on fire and locking manager Tommy Lasorda out of his own office, antics he later recounted in three books written with sportswriter Rick Talley.
