1968 Topps #429 Tommie Sisk

About Tommie Sisk
The fifth-series card #429 in the 1968 Topps set carries the best season Sisk ever put together. Working almost entirely as a starter in 1967 -- 31 starts in 37 appearances -- he went 13-13 with a 3.34 ERA, the best mark on the Pittsburgh staff among pitchers with at least ten starts, and piled up a career-high 207 2/3 innings with 85 strikeouts. He completed 11 of those starts, tenth in the National League, and threw two shutouts. The one number that stings: 78 walks, fifth-most in the league. Only six of the 196 hits he allowed left the yard.
Tommie Wayne Sisk, born April 12, 1942, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, was a 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-hander out of Polytechnic High School in Long Beach, California, who signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1960. He was in the majors by July 19, 1962, still 20 years old, and the debut was a rough one: he started against the New York Mets and was gone after 1 1/3 innings, charged with three runs on two hits and three walks. He stuck anyway, working out of the Pittsburgh bullpen and then the rotation for seven seasons before one-year stops with San Diego and the Chicago White Sox, who acquired him for Jerry Nyman on March 30, 1970. Across 316 games and 99 starts he went 40-49 with a 3.92 ERA, 19 complete games, four shutouts, 10 saves and 441 strikeouts in 928 1/3 innings. He was no help at the plate, hitting .094 with a single extra-base hit in 235 career at-bats, and he pitched his last big league game on June 14, 1970.
