About Bruce Howard

The 1968 Topps card #293, from the fourth series, depicts Howard with the Baltimore Orioles after Chicago traded him there the previous November along with Don Buford and Roger Nelson in the deal that returned Luis Aparicio to the White Sox. Howard pitched briefly for Baltimore before being sent to the Washington Senators for Fred Valentine in June 1968.

Bruce Ernest Howard, a right-handed pitcher born in Salisbury, Maryland, reached the majors with the Chicago White Sox in September 1963 after his amateur days at Villanova University. Over six seasons with the White Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Washington Senators, he compiled a 26-31 record with a 3.18 ERA in 120 appearances, striking out 349 batters across 528 and two-thirds innings, with seven complete games, four shutouts and one save. In 1966, his only winning season as a full-time member of the rotation, he went 9-5 with a 2.30 ERA for Chicago. The White Sox traded him to Baltimore along with Don Buford and Roger Nelson in November 1967, in the deal that brought Luis Aparicio back to Chicago; the Orioles later sent him to Washington for Fred Valentine in June 1968. Howard batted from both sides while throwing right-handed. He was never selected to an All-Star team and is not enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. His son, David Howard, also played in the major leagues.
