1968 Topps #557 Frank Quilici

About Frank Quilici
This high-number seventh-series card, #557, catches Quilici in his most productive big league season for the Twins. He played all over the infield that year, logging time at second, third and even first base, and hit a career-high .245 after coach Billy Martin suggested he bring his hands in closer on his swing. Quilici also hit his first major league home run in 1968, a solo shot on the season's final day. His rookie card came two years earlier, in 1966.
Frank Quilici spent his entire major league career with the Minnesota Twins, breaking in as an infielder in July 1965 after batting .277 for the Triple-A Denver Bears. He started all seven games of the 1965 World Series at second base and tied a Series record with two hits in one inning during a six-run rally against Don Drysdale in Game One. Quilici played second, third and shortstop for Minnesota through 1970, reaching a career-high .245 average in 1968 after Twins coach Billy Martin suggested he bring his hands in closer on his swing; that same season he also hit his first major league home run, a solo shot on the year's final day. He finished with a .214 average, five home runs and 53 RBI over 405 games. Quilici later coached for the Twins and, in July 1972 at age 33, became the youngest manager in the majors, guiding Minnesota to three straight third-place finishes before his 1975 firing. He went on to broadcast Twins games for several more seasons.
