About Curt Blefary

Blefary's 1968 season saw his batting average fall to .200 with 15 home runs and 39 RBIs as Orioles manager Hank Bauer shifted him to catcher, where he caught 40 games. On April 27, 1968, he caught Tom Phoebus's no-hitter against the Red Sox. He was traded to Houston that December in the deal that brought Mike Cuellar to Baltimore.

Curtis Leroy Blefary, born July 5, 1943 in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Mahwah, New Jersey, was a left-handed hitting outfielder, first baseman, and catcher who played eight major league seasons for the Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, and San Diego Padres. Signed by the Yankees in 1962, he was claimed by Baltimore on waivers in 1963 and broke into the majors in 1965, batting .260 with 22 home runs to win the American League Rookie of the Year award. He was a key contributor to the Orioles' 1966 World Series championship team, appearing in that Series. Across his career Blefary moved between the outfield, first base, and catcher as managers sought to keep his bat in the lineup. Traded to Houston in December 1968, he later played for the Yankees, Athletics, and Padres before retiring in 1972 with a .237 career batting average, 112 home runs, and 382 RBIs in 974 games. He struggled with alcoholism in his later years and died in 2001.
