About Ricardo Joseph

Joseph opened 1968 as part of the Phillies infield mix he had joined the previous August, appearing in 66 games and splitting time mainly between first and third base. He hit .219 with 3 home runs and 12 RBIs, holding a utility role behind the club's regular corner infielders. His 1968 Topps card, number 434 in the fifth print series, is a regular-series issue and stands as his rookie card, showing him with the Phillies the year after his dramatic 1967 debut homer.

Ricardo Emelindo Joseph Harrigan, a corner infielder from San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic, signed with the San Francisco Giants organization in 1959 and spent five seasons working through their farm system before Kansas City drafted him and brought him to the majors in June 1964. After a short stint with the Athletics, the Phillies picked him up and sent him to their San Diego farm club, where he was named Most Valuable Player of the Pacific Coast League in 1967. Called up that August, he introduced himself to Philadelphia fans on September 16, 1967, with a pinch-hit, walk-off grand slam off Ron Perranoski against the Dodgers - through 2019 still the last time any major leaguer opened his home-run account that way. He spent the next three seasons as a utility infielder and outfielder for the Phillies before finishing his pro career in the minors and Mexican League. He batted and threw right-handed and stood 6-foot-1.
