1968 Topps #387 Joe Foy

About Joe Foy
Card #387 in the 1968 Topps series-5 run is another plain base card for Foy. In the pitching-dominated 1968 season his average sank to .225, and he led American League third basemen with 30 errors. An off-field incident, a drunken-driving arrest alongside teammate Juan Pizarro, added to the Red Sox's frustration with him. Boston left Foy exposed in the expansion draft that fall, and the Kansas City Royals took him with the fourth overall pick.
Joe Foy grew up in the Bronx and signed with Minnesota in 1962 before the Red Sox drafted him. He tore through the minors, winning the 1965 International League batting title, MVP and Rookie of the Year with Toronto, and broke in at third base for Boston in 1966. Foy drew walks at an elite rate and helped anchor the 1967 pennant-winning Red Sox, batting in Boston's World Series loss to St. Louis. Weight and fielding struggles dogged him, and after 1968 the Red Sox left him unprotected; Kansas City took him in the expansion draft. A strong 1969 season led the Royals to trade him to the Mets, a deal remembered for the player Kansas City got back. His bat cooled in New York, and after a brief stop with Washington he was out of the majors by 1971. Foy later overcame substance-abuse issues and worked as a counselor for troubled youth.
