1968 Topps #337 Bill Robinson

About Bill Robinson
Robinson remained a fourth outfielder for the Yankees in 1968, appearing in 107 games and batting .240 with 6 home runs, 40 RBIs and 34 runs, numbers close to his rookie season the year before. His Topps #337, issued in the set's fourth print series, captures him still chasing the everyday job in right field that had eluded him since spring training 1967.
William Henry Robinson Jr. played sixteen big-league seasons, 1966 to 1983, as an outfielder who also logged time at first and third base, debuting with the Atlanta Braves as a pinch runner for Hank Aaron. Traded to the Yankees, he struggled to hold a regular job before finding his stride with the Phillies and then the Pirates, where his career peaked in 1977: a .304 average, 26 home runs and 104 RBIs. He reached the postseason three times with Pittsburgh, going 5-for-19 in the 1979 World Series as the Pirates rallied past Baltimore. Career totals: 1,472 games, a .258 average, 166 home runs and 641 RBIs. After retiring in 1983, Robinson became a respected hitting coach, mentoring Darryl Strawberry and Wally Backman with the Mets and later coaching for the Marlins, collecting three World Series rings across playing and coaching roles before his death in 2007.
