About Danny Cater

Card #535 is a high number, a series-7 issue for the Athletics' first season in Oakland. It covers the best season of Cater's career: a .290 average, second in the American League batting race behind Carl Yastrzemski's .301, the lowest average ever to win a major league batting title. Cater also led all American League first basemen with a .995 fielding percentage. He played 147 games, 121 at first base and 20 in the outfield, finishing with 6 home runs, 62 RBI and 53 runs scored.

Danny Anderson Cater was born February 25, 1940, in Austin, Texas, and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies at age 18 in June 1958. He played twelve major league seasons, 1964-1975, for the Phillies, White Sox, Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, Yankees, Red Sox and Cardinals, filling in at first base, third base and the outfield. He was the 1968 American League batting runner-up at .290, behind Carl Yastrzemski's .301, the lowest average ever to win a major league batting title, and led American League first basemen with a .995 fielding percentage that year. He set a full-season best of .301 for the 1970 Yankees. Traded to Boston before the 1972 season along with Mario Guerrero for reliever Sparky Lyle, he retired with a .276 average, 1,229 hits, 66 home runs and 519 RBI, and later worked at the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts office in Austin.
