About Dave Boswell

In 1968's Year of the Pitcher, Boswell got off to an inconsistent start for a Twins team hurt by injuries to Harmon Killebrew, Rod Carew and Tony Oliva. He threw a three-hit, 10-strikeout shutout against Cleveland on May 29, then injured his back colliding with a catcher in July. He returned to finish 10-13 with a 3.32 ERA in 190 innings, his first losing season. This card, #322, comes from the fourth print series with the Twins.

Dave Boswell was a hard-throwing right-hander who debuted with the Minnesota Twins in 1964 at age 19 and spent eight major league seasons, all in the American League, with the Twins, Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles. He averaged 14 wins and over 200 innings across a four-year stretch from 1966 to 1969, leading the AL in winning percentage in 1966 and winning a career-high 20 games in 1969, when Minnesota captured the first AL West title. Boswell pitched for the pennant-winning 1965 Twins in their World Series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers and started Game Two of the 1969 ALCS against Baltimore, a game in which he suffered the arm injury that effectively ended his effectiveness. He also had a memorable off-field incident in 1969, getting into a fight with a teammate and his manager outside a Detroit bar. A good-hitting pitcher who batted .202 for his career, Boswell finished his career in 1971 with a 68-56 record and 3.52 ERA. He died in 2012 at age 67.
