1968 Topps #492 Jeff Torborg

About Jeff Torborg
After the Dodgers traded Roseboro and acquired All-Star Tom Haller to be their starting catcher, Torborg remained the experienced backup behind the plate for the 1968 season. His 1968 Topps card, #492, comes from the sixth print series and lists him with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Jeff Torborg was a catcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels from 1964 to 1973, prized for handling a pitching staff rather than for his bat. A Rutgers All-American who hit .537 in his final college season, he signed with the Dodgers in 1963 and spent most of his career as a backup, not becoming a full-time starter until his last season in Anaheim. Despite the limited playing time, Torborg caught three no-hitters for three different pitchers: Sandy Koufax's 1965 perfect game, Bill Singer's 1970 no-hitter, and the first of Nolan Ryan's seven no-hitters in 1973, making him one of a handful of catchers to catch a no-hitter in each league. He finished his playing days with a .214 average, 8 home runs and 101 RBI over ten seasons. Torborg went on to a long second career as a manager, coach and broadcaster, leading the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, New York Mets, Montreal Expos and Florida Marlins, and won American League Manager of the Year with the White Sox in 1990.
