1968 Topps #474 Paul Schaal

About Paul Schaal
It comes from the set's sixth series, picturing Schaal with the Angels. That season he reclaimed the starting third base job in spring training, but on June 13 he was struck above the left ear by a pitch from Boston's Jose Santiago, suffering a fractured skull and a punctured eardrum that caused permanent hearing loss and ended his season early after a brief, dizziness-plagued return in August.
Paul Schaal was a third baseman who spent 11 major league seasons with the Los Angeles/California Angels and the Kansas City Royals. Signed by the Angels out of high school in Compton, California, he climbed through their farm system and broke in as a slick-fielding but light-hitting rookie regular in 1965. Injuries and platoon duty followed, including a frightening beaning above the left ear at Fenway Park in June 1968 that fractured his skull and caused permanent hearing loss. Left unprotected, he was drafted by the expansion Royals that fall and became their everyday third baseman, peaking with a .288 average in 1973 and a career-high 11 home runs in 1971. He finished his career back with the Angels in 1974 after Kansas City handed third base to a young George Brett. Schaal later ran a pizza restaurant in Kansas City before earning a chiropractic degree and practicing in the area. He died in 2017.
