About Ken Holtzman
In 1968 Holtzman again had his season interrupted by National Guard duty, including August guard service during the Democratic National Convention, and went 11-14 with a 3.35 ERA over 32 starts for the Cubs. He appears on 1968 Topps #60, a first-series card, and on #380, the Sporting News All-Star subset card whose reverse forms part of a connected puzzle with other subset cards.
Kenneth Dale Holtzman, born November 3, 1945, in St. Louis, Missouri, was a left-handed pitcher who spent 15 major league seasons (1965-1979) with the Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees. Drafted by the Cubs in the fourth round of the 1965 draft out of the University of Illinois, he broke into the rotation in 1966 and quickly became the ace of a rebuilding Cubs staff, throwing no-hitters against the Atlanta Braves in 1969 and the Cincinnati Reds in 1971. Traded to Oakland after the 1971 season for outfielder Rick Monday, Holtzman joined a staff anchored by Vida Blue and Catfish Hunter and helped the Athletics win three consecutive World Series titles from 1972 through 1974, making two All-Star teams and winning 21 games in 1973. He finished his career with a 174-150 record, a 3.49 ERA and 1,601 strikeouts across 451 games.
